What is God like?

God is a pure spirit who transcends human gender and sex, although His perfection is reflected in the complementary perfections of man and woman (CCC 370). He exists as the Holy Trinity, consisting of one God in three distinct but inseparable persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (CCC 261-266). Within this divine operation, the Father is the source and origin, the Son is eternally begotten by Him, and the Holy Spirit proceeds from Him (CCC 2790). This divine transcendence is not a distance but a manifestation of His majesty and holiness, which allows Him to be close to those who humble themselves (CCC 2794).

God is characterized by infinite perfection, including omniscience, power, providence, and goodness. He is the omnipotent Creator who brought heaven and earth into existence out of nothing (CCC 296). Furthermore, God is Truth, meaning His words cannot deceive and are always fulfilled (Ps 119:160, CCC 215). His holiness serves as the fundamental basis for human holiness, calling His people to reflect this quality in their own lives (Lev 11:44-45).

The relationship between God and humanity is defined by a gratuitous and unconditional love that is compared to the love of a father for his son, a mother for her children, and a bridegroom for his beloved (CCC 218-219). This love is further evidenced by His faithfulness to His covenant, such as His promise to restore the people of Israel to their ancestral land (Ezekiel 43:9). Through the revelation of Jesus Christ, humanity can recognize God as “Father,” establishing a new relationship of mutual belonging as a gratuitous gift (CCC 2787). This fatherly nature is a mystery that transcends human understanding but is made known through the Son and the Spirit (CCC 2779-2780).

God has revealed Himself definitively through Jesus Christ, the preexistent and incarnate Word of God (CCC 436). Jesus is both fully human and fully divine, serving as the Lamb of God, the Messiah, and the King of Israel (John 1:36, 1:41, CCC 464). As a superior and compassionate High Priest, Jesus offers eternal salvation through His sacrifice on the cross, which stands as the ultimate expression of God’s love for humanity (Hebrews 1:5-2:18, CCC 611). Through this incarnation, the Kingdom of God has been brought near, promising a final realization when Christ returns to hand the kingdom over to the Father (CCC 2816).

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and is essential for faith, as it is impossible to confess that Jesus is Lord without the Spirit’s touch (CCC 683). The Spirit mediates the knowledge of the Father and communicates the divine life of the Father and Son to believers through Baptism (CCC 683-684). Additionally, the Spirit guides the Church in the gradual understanding and interpretation of Sacred Scripture. The presence of the Spirit in the heart enables the believer to cry out “Abba! Father!” and provides the strength to discern between trials for growth and temptations leading to sin (Romans 8:15, CCC 2847).
